Short answer: for light, preventive pest control in a home that doesn’t already have a problem, Pestie can be worth it, if you’ll actually spray your own perimeter every few months. It stops being worth it once you have a real infestation, especially the budding ants and German roaches that are common in Southwest Florida. At that point you need the right product for the specific pest, not another round of perimeter spray.

Here’s what Pestie is, what’s in it, where it works, and when a professional makes more sense.
What Pestie is
Pestie sells a do-it-yourself pest control subscription called the Smart Pest Plan. According to Pestie’s website, each plan is customized by ZIP code, the pests you pick, how bad the problem is, and your climate. A shipment includes:
- Pesticide concentrate, pre-measured for one treatment
- A mixing bag you fill with water
- A rechargeable electric sprayer (first shipment only)
- Nitrile gloves and a step-by-step guide
Pestie says most customers reapply every 2 to 3 months, and its buy page lists four treatments a year. When we checked, treatments started at about $55 each at the regular price, with discounts for subscribing or prepaying.
Pestie’s application guide has you spray a 4-foot band around the foundation (2 feet up the wall and 2 feet out on the ground), plus windows, door frames, and garage door openings, with baseboards indoors optional. Pestie says it takes about 10 minutes and the treated areas usually dry in under an hour. Once mixed, the product can’t be stored overnight.
What are Pestie’s ingredients?
Pestie doesn’t list its active ingredients on its public web pages, and because each plan is customized by location and pest, what’s in your box can differ from your neighbor’s. The site describes its formulas as “microcapsule suspension” concentrates with “co-milled dual-active ingredients.”
The reliable way to know is the label. Pestie says every shipment comes with the original EPA-approved label and full safety information. The label lists the active ingredients and an EPA registration number, which you can look up in the EPA’s pesticide product database. Read it before you spray, and follow it exactly.
One thing worth checking on the label: whether the main active ingredient is a pyrethroid, such as bifenthrin, cypermethrin, or esfenvalerate. Pyrethroids are good contact insecticides, but ants tend to avoid them, and that matters in Florida (more below).
Where Pestie works well
- Prevention in a home without an active problem. A perimeter treatment every few months helps keep spiders, earwigs, millipedes, and outdoor ants and roaches from wandering in.
- Homeowners who don’t mind the work. You’ll need to remember the schedule, mix and spray correctly, and avoid wind and rain. Pestie’s own guidance says not to spray if rain is expected within 24 hours.
- Small, simple properties. A standard lot with easy access to the foundation is where a DIY perimeter spray makes the most sense.
Pestie also offers gel baits for ants and roaches, with separate application guides. Baits are the right tool for trailing ants, so if you go the DIY route, use them.
Where it backfires in Southwest Florida
Budding ants. The small ants that invade SWFL kitchens, especially ghost ants and white-footed ants, have colonies with many queens. When a repellent spray disturbs them, a colony can split into several new ones. That’s how one ant trail becomes four. These ants need non-repellent treatments and baits placed where they’re trailing, not a perimeter barrier. Our tiny ant identification guide shows how to tell which one you have.
German cockroaches. They live indoors, around kitchens and bathrooms, so a spray around the foundation never reaches them. They need baits and growth regulators placed where they hide, and they often take several visits to clear.
Problems a perimeter spray isn’t built for. No perimeter spray, from any company, treats subterranean termites, bed bugs, or rodents. Termites need soil treatments or bait stations, bed bugs need targeted interior treatment, and rodents need their entry points sealed.
Misidentified pests. With DIY, you’re the one deciding what the pest is. If that call is wrong, you can spend several shipments treating the wrong thing.
Pestie vs. a professional service
| What you're getting | Pestie (DIY subscription) | Professional service |
|---|---|---|
| Who applies it | You, on Pestie's schedule | A licensed technician |
| Products | Customized perimeter concentrate; ant and roach gels offered | Sprays, non-repellents, baits, dusts, and granules chosen for your pest |
| Pest identification | You do it | Done on site |
| Where it's applied | Foundation band, windows, doors; baseboards optional | Perimeter, eaves, soffits, entry points, and interior hot spots |
| If pests come back | Guarantee for active subscribers: advice, coaching, retreatment, or refund at Pestie's discretion | Free re-treatment between scheduled visits (with Waves) |
| Best for | Prevention in a home without an active problem | Active infestations, budding ants, German roaches, recurring problems |
Pestie is a reasonable tool for prevention. The mismatch happens when people use prevention to fix an infestation.
A note on guarantees: Pestie’s bug-free guarantee covers active subscribers who apply as directed and report persistent pests within 30 days, and Pestie decides the remedy. At Waves, if covered pests come back between scheduled visits on a recurring plan, we come back and re-treat at no charge. If we can’t solve the covered problem after a fair chance, we refund your most recent service payment. See the Waves Guarantee for details.
When to hire a pro
Hire a pro if:
- You already have an active infestation, not just a prevention routine.
- You’re seeing small ants trailing indoors, and spraying made them spread.
- You’re seeing small, striped roaches in the kitchen (German cockroaches).
- You suspect termites, bed bugs, or rodents.
- You don’t want to be the one spraying and tracking the schedule.
On a Waves visit, a licensed technician inspects first, identifies the pest, and treats with the product that fits it, like non-repellent baits for ghost ants or gel bait and growth regulators for German roaches. Quarterly visits focus on the exterior, with interior treatment when you need it, and a photo service report after every visit.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Is Pestie worth it?
For preventive perimeter spraying in a home without an active problem, it can be, as long as you’ll apply it on schedule and follow the label. For active infestations, especially budding ants and German cockroaches, a targeted professional treatment usually costs less in the long run than several rounds of the wrong product.
What active ingredients does Pestie use?
Pestie doesn’t list active ingredients on its public web pages, and plans are customized by location and pest. It describes its concentrates as microcapsule suspensions with dual active ingredients. The EPA label that comes in every shipment lists the exact active ingredients and the EPA registration number.
Can I use Pestie and a professional service together?
You can, but tell your technician what you’ve applied and share the label. Spraying a repellent product over a pro’s bait placements or non-repellent treatment can make ants avoid the bait and undo the work.
Is Pestie safe for pets and kids?
Pestie’s guidance is that people and pets should stay off treated areas until the product has fully dried, which usually takes less than an hour. That’s the same standard we use: follow the label and keep everyone off treated surfaces until they’re dry.
How often do I need to apply Pestie?
Pestie says most customers reapply every 2 to 3 months, and its plans ship four treatments a year.
Is DIY pest control enough for a severe infestation?
Usually not. Severe infestations, and pests like German roaches, budding ants, termites, and bed bugs, need correct identification and targeted treatment. That’s where a licensed professional earns the cost.
What’s the difference between DIY and professional pest control?
DIY means you identify the pest, choose the product, and apply it. A professional does the inspection and identification, chooses from a wider range of products, treats areas you can’t easily reach, and comes back if the problem returns.
